There you go - after 10 month of building - my new Garratt:
.
If you read my story about
building the Garratt so far (Project NGG11) you already know that the basis for
this model is a kit of a German War Department tender loco. After some struggles
I decided to model the first NGG 11 design because the shape of the cab fitted
the one better I already possessed with the WD loco kit.
.
Unfortunately to get data of the NGG 11 is quite difficult. There are some good
informations about the second version (particularly since the
Sandstone Heritage Trust
restored No 55 from the second
lot to working
order) but almost none about the first.
.
I chose to build a version without cow catcher as reproduced in A.E.Durrant's
outstanding book 'Garratt Locomotives Of The World'.

Furthermore a version which
prominently accomodates the dynamo amidst the loco bridge. Since I didn't manage
to get a casting the British looking dynamo was modified from a Fleischmann
Magic Train one.

Tank and coal bunker
superstructures clearly show their origins from the kit.

Ash pan and back of the
firebox were complex parts to build. As I mentioned on the
Project NGG11 page there's few left of the original
cab from the kit. Front, rear and roof were made completely new.
Here you see the only real
shortcoming (if you want) of my model. Caused by the given layout of the valve
gear of the WD loco I couldn't manage to get a prototypical clearance between cab and bunker.
